You may have previously read some of our blog posts about our fantastic phonics work and other reading opportunities. On average pupils at Springfields improve their reading age by 9 months every year. In fact last year one student improved their reading age by 42 months in 10 calendar months! This year we’ve really wanted to focus on inspiring our pupils to become writers as well as readers; that’s why we’ve turned to Pobble, who pride themselves on making writing ridiculously exciting.
On Tuesday 27th September we were joined by Zoe from Pobble who worked with groups of students to develop their writing skills. First up was Mr Wolfe and Oak Class who did some very creepy writing about a mysterious house. Next, was Miss Deacon and Elm Class who wrote letters from the trenches of the 1st World War, which really complemented their class novel of ‘War Horse’.
You can view the fantastic work created here:
Why not consider creating a Pobble account so that you can leave comments on our pupils’ work? Better still why not follow our school page?
We look forward to bringing you more fabulous writing throughout the school year.
A fantastic LOTC lesson with Elm on Cherhill. The objective, to carry a surfboard to the top and not let it touch the ground once……completed.
Learn how to walk on a compass bearing…….completed.
How to succeed through challenge and discomfort…….completed!!
Well done to all the class for their efforts.
Cracking job by one of our students again this week, we’re starting to put together a seating area using some of the tree pieces that we have at hand and re-potting a few herbs which should blossom quite nicely.
Great to see Elm tutor group up for a bit of digging, again helping to pot up some of the tyre displays and as a reward have taken home some tomatoes plants and sunflowers.

Yesterday, we were visited by Kirsten Mackie, our Read, Write Inc trainer, for our first development day. You may remember that last June 40 academy staff undertook an extensive 2 day phonics training course, helping us learn our split digraphs from our phonemes! Kirsten was delighted to return to follow up on this training and see how pupils and staff were getting on with their phonics.
It was a jam-packed day, including popping into lessons, a masterclass from Kirsten, alongside the creation of a development plan. We saw some fantastic learning, particularly from Beech Class who really impressed with their ‘aw’ spellings. Willow were working on the ‘y’ sound and produced some brilliant handwriting. Kyle and Jordan from Elm were really enthusiastic in their reading of ‘Ken’s Cap’ and were the star performers of Kirsten’s masterclass. Ash, Pine and Maple were all working hard on their respective Fresh Start modules and some lovely reading, spelling and writing was seen throughout.
I will be working with staff over the coming weeks to share the action points from the day so that we can continue to place literacy at the heart of our curriculum. I will also keep you updated on these actions and our progress towards completing them.
If you would like further information about our phonics then please contact myself or look at the Read, Write Inc website.
