British Values

"To build safe, independent lives through support, understanding and enablement"

British Values play a vital role in preparing our learners to become successful citizens in 21st-century Britain. They help our young people build essential knowledge and understanding around key principles such as tolerance, individual liberty and mutual respect- crucial for thriving in a diverse and modern society. These values foster an appreciation of Britain’s rich cultural diversity and encourage respectful engagement with different beliefs and perspectives. At The Springfields Academy, the teaching of British Values is embedded within our learners’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and is a core part of our formal PSHE curriculum, supporting our wider mission to build safe and independent lives for autistic young people through support, understanding, and enablement.

Democracy is deeply embedded throughout The Springfields Academy, empowering pupils to actively shape their educational experience and environment. Through the Pupil Parliament, learners engage in meaningful decision-making and represent their peers' views. Our HEARD initiative ensures every pupil’s voice is valued, fostering inclusive dialogue across the school. Pupil voice feeds directly into action groups, translating ideas into improvements. Learners also contribute to educational decisions, influencing curriculum design and school policies. Furthermore, pupils play a central role in shaping their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), ensuring their individual needs and aspirations are at the heart of their learning journey.

At Springfields, Rule of Law is embedded throughout our school culture. Pupils learn that laws are essential for keeping everyone safe, treating people fairly, and helping communities thrive. Through our structured routines, behaviour policies and restorative approaches, students understand the importance of rules and the natural consequences of their choices. We encourage respectful dialogue around fairness and justice, helping learners to see how laws apply both in school and in wider society. By promoting responsibility and accountability, we empower our pupils to become thoughtful citizens who value the role of law in protecting rights and promoting equality. Students have a vital role to play in the formation of our school rules, through the use of classroom charters and working agreements in PSHE lessons.

At The Springfields Academy, we promote Individual Liberty by encouraging pupils to make good choices and express their authentic autistic self in a safe and supportive environment. Learners are taught that their opinions matter and that they have the right to be heard, respected and valued, in whichever way they feel comfortable communicating. Respect is embedded into our community through our school values. Through our inclusive curriculum and personalised learning approaches, students develop confidence in their identity and are empowered to explore their interests and aspirations. We help pupils understand that with freedom comes responsibility, and we guide them to make informed decisions while respecting the rights and freedoms of others. This fosters a culture of self-awareness, mutual respect and personal growth.

At Springfields, we actively promote Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs by fostering an inclusive and respectful school environment. Pupils are encouraged to explore and appreciate the diverse cultures, religions and worldviews that make up our society. Through curriculum lessons, PSHE lessons and enriching cross-curricular activities, learners gain a deeper understanding of different beliefs and the importance of empathy and acceptance. We celebrate key religious festivals and provide opportunities for open discussion, helping students to challenge stereotypes and build positive relationships. This supports our commitment to creating a community where everyone feels valued, respected and free to express their identity.

At The Springfields Academy, Mutual Respect is a core value that underpins every aspect of school life. We teach our pupils that respect is shown through kindness, listening and valuing each other’s differences. Through our inclusive ethos and nurturing environment, learners understand that everyone has the right to feel safe, heard and accepted. Staff model respectful relationships, and pupils are encouraged to reflect on their actions and consider how they impact others. Whether working collaboratively in class, engaging in wider school activities or being out in the community, students learn that mutual respect builds trust, strengthens community, and supports positive mental health and wellbeing.
