Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapy at Springfields is the foundation to curriculum access for our pupils.

Developing appropriate understanding and use of language is integral for the learners, many of whom have a diagnosed communication need. The Speech and Language Therapist offers weekly communication surgeries for staff, to support and upskill them in the use of communication strategies bespoke to the needs of the children in the class. The Speech and Language Therapist also conducts formal and informal language assessments, makes recommendations and sets specific targets for individuals.

The speech and language therapy approach is integrated into the school day as much as possible, with our therapist working alongside teachers and learning support focusing on whole class, group and individual intervention. Successful communication strategies and/or intervention target any of the following:

  • Attention and Listening
  • Vocabulary
  • Concepts
  • Sound awareness
  • Grammar
  • Higher level reasoning
  • Inference
  • Social rules

The Speech and Language Therapist is responsible for the whole school communication strategy and ensuring a communication friendly environment.

Speech and Language approaches embedded within our curriculum include:

  • Wide range of visuals
  • Attention Autism
  • Shape Coding
  • Word Aware
  • Elklan
