Enquiry Led Knowledge and Understanding of the World Curriculum

Enquiry led curriculum

At Springfields we follow an enquiry-led learning approach which is important and beneficial for several reasons:

  • Develops Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: This approach encourages students to explore and discover knowledge on their own, which helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Encourages Active Learning: Instead of passively absorbing information, students are actively involved in the learning process. This can lead to a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
  • Fosters Curiosity and Engagement: By putting students’ interests and curiosity at the forefront, enquiry-led learning can increase their engagement and motivation. It allows students’ natural curiosity to flourish.
  • Promotes Cross-Curricular Learning: Enquiry-led learning can bring together different subject skills and knowledge and apply them through the project being explored. This joined-up learning leads to more discerning learners.
  • Prepares for the Future: This approach can prepare students for a healthier, more sustainable future by encouraging them to question and challenge the status quo. It can also impact their thinking and actions as they grow into adult life.

  • Enhances Cognitive Skills and Reasoning: By honing problem-solving techniques and critical thinking abilities, students enhance their cognitive skills and reasoning.

How we will deliver an enquiry-led curriculum

We will follow Three enquiry cycles, each running for two years. These will be as follows:

ONE

Cycle A

1 year - 6 terms of enquires

Cycle B

1 year - 6 terms of enquires

TWO

Cycle A

1 year - 6 terms of enquires

Cycle B

1 year - 6 terms of enquires

THREE

Cycle A

1 year - 6 terms of enquires

Cycle B

1 year - 6 terms of enquires

These are progressive, and each enquiry cycle has 12 enquiry questions to answer:

The question will change for enquiry ONE, TWO and THREE, building on the prior learning.

So, for example, in Cycle A, Term 1, every class will be following the theme ‘All about me in my world’, but the classes on enquiry ONE, will be answering ‘What makes me, me?’, those on enquiry TWO will be building on the knowledge learnt in ONE and answering, ‘What’s inside my body?’, and those on THREE will be developing their knowledge even further and answering ‘Why does my heart matter?’.
