Welcome from the Headteacher.

The aim and mission of Springfields Academy. 

Welcome to Springfields! I am delighted to introduce myself as the Head Teacher of Springfields Academy.  One of our many strengths is the wealth of experience within both the teaching and support staff and the way that we all work together to ensure exceptional outcomes for all our young people.  We do all we can to support our pupils to build the skills and competencies for a safe independent life. Our culture is open, friendly and positive and allows all the opportunity to excel.

We are an acknowledged centre of excellence for Autism and are confident in our ability to meet need. We are highly reflective in our practices, and are continually working to improve our provision and practices. We provide a personalised curriculum journey that enables leaners with a diagnosis of autism to develop skills in areas of need and to overcome their barriers to learning. The drive to build ‘safe Independent lives’ shapes this curriculum and everything else that we do. 

Our students are ‘enabled, accepted and respected’ by a curriculum tailored to their needs.

We focus on developing their skills in: 

  • Social communication 
  • Social interaction
  • Social imagination and flexibility 
  • Sensory processing 
  • Emotional understanding and self- awareness 
  • Learning to learn skills
  • Academic progress, achievement and accreditation
  • Independent life skills
  • Community participation  

These skills are underpinned by the ethos that our pupils are at the heart of everything we do. As the skills above develop, (and this will obviously be at different rates, with different application, dependant on diagnosis) opportunity will be provided for the functional application of these skills within the young person’s home, their community and through community and work placement.

The focus of our delivery is to deliver learning on a concrete basis, leading from the experiences of the child. Pupils need to be able to understand the relevance of what they are doing. What has been learned must be relevant to the young person and applicable to their wider world.

In addition to skills development, it is the aim of all staff that pupils leave with national qualifications in English, maths, science, computer science and physical education. A range of other qualifications and outcomes are offered that enable our pupils to leave the academy with confidence, knowledge and heightened self-esteem. In addition to qualifications, pupils have a broad range of personalised opportunities. We actively learn outside the classroom, stay healthy, learn about the world around us and do all we can to make fun, an intrinsic element of all we do. We also have residential provision for a small number of pupils and employ a highly skilled therapeutic team to address the wider needs of some of our pupils.

With all the improvements we keep making, all the developments that are currently being led and managed and our understanding of what we will need to do next to further improve, the Academy is in a very strong position, locally, regionally and nationally.
